Windows licenses come in a few genuinely different forms, and picking the wrong one is the most common mistake buyers make. The short version: if you're setting up a new PC or reinstalling from scratch, you want a Retail or OEM key for the edition you need. If you're managing several machines for a business, a Volume/MAK key is the more practical (and usually cheaper per-seat) option.
Buying guide
Home vs. Pro: Home covers everything most people need day to day — browsing, office work, media. Pro adds BitLocker drive encryption, Remote Desktop (to connect INTO the machine, not just out of it), Group Policy management, and Hyper-V virtualization. If you don't recognize a need for any of those, Home is the better value.
OEM vs. Retail: an OEM key is tied to the first motherboard it's activated on — it's meant for a machine you're not planning to move the license off of. A Retail key can be deactivated and reactivated on a new PC later, which matters if you upgrade hardware every few years. Both are equally genuine; the difference is transferability, not quality.
Windows Server is a different product entirely, not "Windows for offices" — it's built to run as a server (file sharing, Active Directory, virtualization hosts) rather than a daily-use desktop. Standard and Datacenter differ mainly in virtualization rights: Datacenter allows unlimited virtual machines on the licensed hardware, Standard caps it at two.
Frequently asked questions
Will a cheap Windows key actually activate?
Yes — every key we sell is a genuine Microsoft-issued license, sourced through legitimate volume and OEM channels. The lower price reflects the sourcing channel, not the authenticity of the key.
Can I move my Windows license to a new PC?
Retail keys generally can be deactivated and moved. OEM keys are tied to the first motherboard they're activated on and typically can't be transferred — check the listing for which type you're buying before you assume you can move it later.
Do I need a product key if Windows came with my PC?
If Windows is already activated on that specific machine, no — a new key is only needed for a fresh install, a different edition (e.g. upgrading Home to Pro), or a PC that's currently unlicensed.
