Renewing at list price is the most expensive option available to you. Here are the cheaper routes, ranked, and when each one makes sense.

Letting an antivirus subscription auto-renew is almost always the most expensive way to stay protected. Here are the alternatives, in rough order of saving.

1. Buy a new licence key instead of renewing

The largest saving, and the least known. Vendors price new licences to win customers and renewals to retain them, and those are very different numbers for identical software.

A new key activates the same product with the same updates and the same support. What you give up is the convenience of doing nothing.

When it makes sense: almost always, if you are comfortable entering a key once a year or once every three years.

2. Move to a longer term

A three year licence is usually far cheaper per year than one year renewed three times. If you have used the same antivirus for several years and expect to continue, the longer term is straightforwardly better value.

When it makes sense: you are settled on a product and do not plan to switch.

3. Right-size the device count

Multi-device licences are cheap per device but only if you use the devices. Ten device coverage for a household with three machines is money spent on nothing.

Count what you actually protect — including phones and tablets, which do count against most licences — and buy that number rather than the next tier up.

When it makes sense: you upgraded to a bigger bundle at some point and never revisited it.

4. Ask for a retention discount

Contact support before the renewal date and say you are considering cancelling. Retention teams frequently have authority to discount, sometimes substantially.

When it makes sense: you want to stay with the vendor and prefer not to handle a key. Note this usually resets the same problem to next year.

5. Reconsider the tier

Premium suites bundle VPNs, password managers, identity monitoring and cloud backup. If you already use a separate VPN or password manager, you may be paying twice for the same function.

Dropping to the core antivirus tier is often a large saving with no loss of the protection you actually rely on.

Do not buy a renewal code when you need a new licence. They are not always interchangeable, and a renewal code applied to a lapsed or different account can fail to activate.

Be sceptical of lifetime antivirus offers. Antivirus is a service with ongoing definition updates and infrastructure behind it. Vendors do not sell genuine perpetual antivirus licences, so an offer framed that way is worth checking carefully before you buy.
