Windows 11 Home vs Pro vs Enterprise LTSC: Which Edition Do You Need?
Windows 11 Home, Pro and Enterprise LTSC compared plainly — real feature differences and which edition actually fits your PC.

Home, Pro, Education, Enterprise LTSC — the names are confusing. Here is a plain guide to which Windows 11 edition fits you.
Introduction
Microsoft's Windows 11 naming makes this harder than it needs to be. Home, Pro, Education, Enterprise, Enterprise LTSC — most of the names describe a licensing channel, not a meaningfully different operating system. Here's what actually changes between the editions people actually buy.
Windows 11 Home
Home is the default edition on most new consumer laptops and desktops. It has the full modern Windows 11 experience — Start menu, Windows Security, Microsoft Store, all standard apps — but leaves out a handful of features aimed at IT-managed or business environments: BitLocker device encryption (Home only gets the more limited "device encryption"), Remote Desktop (you can connect out, but can't host incoming remote sessions), Hyper-V virtualization, and Group Policy management. For a personal computer with no need to join a company network or run virtual machines, Home covers everything most people ever touch.

Windows 11 Pro
Pro is the same operating system with the business-oriented features switched on: full BitLocker, Hyper-V (built-in virtualization, no third-party software needed), Remote Desktop hosting, Group Policy, and domain/Azure AD join for a managed network. If you work with virtual machines, need to remote into your own PC from elsewhere, or want full-disk encryption without a third-party tool, Pro is the edition that actually supports it — Home structurally can't.

Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC
Enterprise LTSC ("Long-Term Servicing Channel") isn't a feature tier above Pro — it's a different servicing model built for locked-down, specialist machines: manufacturing equipment, medical devices, kiosks, anything that needs to run one job for years without Microsoft's usual feature updates landing on top of it. LTSC strips out most consumer-facing apps (no Store, no Cortana, no built-in Edge on older builds) and only receives security patches, not new features, for years at a stretch. It's licensed through volume/enterprise channels, not sold as a normal consumer product, and it's the wrong choice for a regular desktop — you'd be giving up ordinary feature updates for stability you don't need.
Which One Do You Actually Need?
- Home — a personal PC, gaming, browsing, everyday work, no VMs or remote hosting needed.
- Pro — you run virtual machines, need to remote into this PC from elsewhere, want full BitLocker encryption, or need to join a business/domain network.
- Enterprise LTSC — not a fit for a normal desktop; it's for specialist, locked-down, long-lifecycle hardware managed by an organization's IT department.
For the vast majority of buyers choosing between the two real consumer options, the honest answer is: if you don't already know you need Hyper-V, Remote Desktop hosting, or full BitLocker, Home is genuinely enough — Pro's extra cost buys features a lot of people never touch.
FAQ
Can I upgrade from Home to Pro later without reinstalling? Yes — Windows supports an in-place edition upgrade with a Pro key, no reinstall or lost files required.
Does Pro make my PC faster? No. Performance is identical between Home and Pro — the difference is entirely in which management/security features are unlocked, not speed.
Is Enterprise LTSC available to buy for a home PC? Not through normal retail/reseller channels, and it isn't the right fit for one — it's licensed for organization-managed, single-purpose hardware.
